Report for the World Expands Support to Newsrooms Across the EU, Reinforcing Commitment to Local Independent Journalism, Sustainability and Innovation

Report for the World is pleased to announce its latest expansion in Europe, partnering with four additional newsrooms across the European Union. This marks a continued commitment to building a decentralized global network of local independent media dedicated to public interest journalism.

The new partnerships include Investigative Reporting Project (IRPI media) in Italy, Unbias the News in Germany, Lighthouse Reports in Greece and Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) in Spain. With these new additions, Report for the World has now supported 72 journalists in 53 newsrooms across 32 countries, providing essential funding to cover journalist salaries while supporting newsrooms to advance innovation, long-term sustainability, and community-centered reporting.

“We are extending support to more experienced editorial roles in European newsrooms, enabling deeper collaboration between EU newsrooms and our local-global journalism partners,” said Preethi Nallu, executive director of Report for the World.

Report for the World works with independent, community-centred outlets serving diverse and often underserved populations in the global majority. Through these partnerships, Report for the World provides comprehensive support that includes three-year salary funding for beat reporters, enabling stable employment for journalists and sustained coverage of key topics that affect local communities and global discourse. Report for the World works with partner newsrooms to equip them with the skills and tools to generate diversified revenue and build strong audience relationships to ensure that they remain independent, competitive, and responsive to social, political and industry shifts.

“There is a growing need for collaboration between newsrooms across Europe and those in the global majority, where many of today’s most urgent stories unfold. We are proud of our new partnerships. The specialized roles we’re supporting, from open-source investigations and climate reporting to multimedia storytelling, are essential to uncovering complex truths and making them accessible to diverse audiences,” added Preethi.

Report for the World’s expanded presence in the EU reflects an ongoing mission to support local independent journalism that is critical to the health of democracies and communities around the world.

“For Unbias the News, this partnership has been deeply meaningful. It directly supports our mission to challenge structural barriers in journalism and to collaborate with freelancers from underrepresented regions and communities around the world.  This support has helped us strengthen our editorial work and extend our reach— particularly in the local contexts we cover, where our impact is felt most. It allows us to continue working with a truly global network of contributors and to tell the kinds of stories that often get overlooked,” commented Mercy Abang, managing director, Unbias The News.

Investing in the Future of Independent Media

As the journalism landscape undergoes rapid transformation, the challenges faced by independent newsrooms— shrinking revenues, disinformation, and growing threats to press freedom— demand bold, systemic solutions. Report for the World is committed to addressing these challenges by supporting sustainable newsroom models and fostering innovation through capacity-building and collaboration.

“Report for the World is an ideal partner—responsive to real needs and refreshingly flexible in how they offer support. Their non-financial contributions, from expanding international networks to investing in skills-building across the sector, are just as vital as their funding. We believe deeply in their leadership to level the playing field in journalism and drive a more equitable future for the industry,” Ariadne Papagapitos, impact director, Lighthouse Reports.
